Choose plants for the aquarium you can maintain. Stronger lighting is not a shortcut around planning.
Define the kind of planted tank you want
Picture the weekly work as well as the finished layout. A slower-growing aquarium with undemanding plants can be a good place to learn. A dense carpet or demanding red stems may require more specialized lighting, carbon management, and trimming.
Check the growth requirements of each exact plant and choose specimens suited to your water and equipment. Leave swimming space and make sure the layout allows filter access and cleaning.
Use light deliberately
Put the light on a timer and start with a conservative schedule. Tropica suggests six hours a day during the early establishment of a new planted aquarium. Treat that as a starting point to observe, rather than a rule for every tank.
Increase only when growth and maintenance support it. Direct sunlight can complicate both temperature and algae management. More light asks more of the rest of the system.
Understand planting and nutrients
Check whether a plant should be rooted in substrate, attached to hardscape, or left floating. Follow species-specific planting instructions so that parts that should remain exposed are not buried. Trim damaged material and avoid packing plants so densely that maintenance becomes impossible.
Use aquarium fertilizer appropriate for your setup and follow its label. Root-feeding and water-column-feeding plants may need different approaches. Record doses so that a change in growth has context. Do not assume that every yellow leaf needs an immediate extra dose.
Keep fish welfare in the design
Plants are habitat, not permission to overstock or skip testing. Keep circulation appropriate, protect access to the surface where needed, and remove decaying material. Algae is a cue to review light, maintenance, and growth conditions before adding another animal to “clean it up.”
If you choose injected CO₂, learn its equipment and failure modes before use. Balance the system gradually and watch the fish. A beautiful layout should remain a comfortable, stable home.
