Dussumieri Tang (Acanthurus dussumieri)
At Fish Are Friends, we are thrilled to offer the Dussumieri Tang, also known as Dussumier's Surgeonfish, Eye-Stripe Surgeonfish, or Ornate Surgeonfish. This species is a stunning addition to any large marine aquarium, showcasing bold patterns and graceful movements.
Description:
The Dussumieri Tang is a large, deep-bodied fish with a maximum length of 54 cm (21 inches), though most commonly around 35 cm (14 inches) in aquariums. Its pale brownish body is adorned with intricate, wavy blue-grey lines, while its head features a dense network of bolder blue lines and a vibrant orange stripe above the eyes. The base of the dorsal fin is accented with a narrow orange band, and the crescent-shaped caudal fin is a striking dark blue speckled with black. Like all surgeonfish, this species has scalpel-like scales near the caudal peduncle, used for defense.
Juveniles start off with a greyish body and yellow and black caudal fins. As they grow, the body lightens, and the signature wavy lines and facial patterns emerge, transforming them into the ornate beauty prized by aquarists.
Habitat and Behavior:
Native to tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian and West Pacific Oceans, the Dussumieri Tang is found from East Africa to southern Japan and Indonesia, extending to eastern Australia. It inhabits depths up to 130 meters (427 ft), thriving in lagoons, reefs, and inter-reef areas with sandy or rubble substrates. Juveniles often shoal near reefs, while adults are more solitary or found in small groups.
Diet:
This tang is a herbivore, feeding primarily on algae and detritus. It plays a critical role in reef ecosystems by grazing on algal films, diatoms, and planktonic particles. In captivity, a varied diet of marine algae, seaweed, and high-quality herbivore pellets will help maintain its vibrant coloration and health.
Care Requirements:
The Dussumieri Tang requires a spacious tank of at least 200 gallons, with ample swimming room and rockwork for grazing. While generally peaceful, it may display territorial behavior towards other tangs. A well-maintained aquarium with high water quality and stable conditions will allow this species to thrive.
Why Choose Fish Are Friends?
Our Dussumieri Tangs undergo comprehensive quarantine procedures to ensure they arrive in peak health, ready to become the centerpiece of your marine display. By choosing Fish Are Friends, you're investing in a healthy, vibrant fish from a trusted source.
